OSIRIS-REx Is Getting Closer Through the Earth

OSIRIS-REx, which had been manufactured by Lockheed Martin, the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and NASA, was started a long journey to 101955 Bennu on 8 September 2016 to take samples from it. There are three processes before it arrives the asteroid; Turn around the Sun, enter the gravity of the Earth and arrive the asteroid. Therefore, OSIRIS-REx arrived the Earth to take an amount of speed to reach the asteroid after it had completed one tour around the Sun, so that approach is today!

What will happen after the explorer arrives at the Bennu? What is its goal? The Bennu was selected because of the availability of pristine carbonaceous material, a key element in organic molecules necessary for life as well as representative of matter from before the formation of Earth. Organic molecules, such as amino acids, have previously been found in meteorite and comet samples, indicating that some ingredients necessary for life can be naturally synthesized in outer space. When it enters in orbit of the asteroid in August 2018, it will start scanning and find its questions.

OSIRIS-REx has Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) to gather samples of the Bennu, so when the arm touches the Bennu’s surface to take samples, it will incarcerate in the capsule of the spacecraft, then it will send to deliver the capsule to the scientists of NASA in March 2023.

You may watch launching and mission overview videos of OSIRIS-REx.

We will see what the Bennu hides from us that day!
